What is a "rebound" headache? Answer The overuse or misuse of pain relief products containing ingredients such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, pseudoepherine and caffine can cause headaches to reoccur after the medication is cleared from the body. This "rebound headache" is typically experienced when the dose, frequency and/or length of period the medication is consumed exceeds recommendations on the packaging label. When these pain relievers wear off, physical withdrawal symptoms can result, which can lead to a cycle of wanting to take more medicine. For more information on rebound headaches Click Here
How can I cope with allergies while working in the yard or exercising outdoors? Answer The best way to deal with yardwork is have someone else do it. If this is not an option, take antihistamine medication about an hour before you head outdoors. Consider wearing a mask when raking leaves or mowing, since these activities will stir up pollen and mold. It is also important to wash your hands, rinse your eyes and shower right after yard work. If the pollen count is very high, you might want to save the yard work for another day. Obviously, we breathe in more air when excercising. The more air you inhale, the more pollen and mold spores come with it. Consider taking your workout indoors on days you are having problems with your allergies. You can also ease symptoms by taking a nondrowsy antihistamine before you exercise and planning a route that is less likely to expose you to allergens. Also try to avoid major roads as chemical irritants from exhaust can worsen allergy symptoms. For more information on coping with your allergies during yardwork and exercise Click Here
How long are eggs safe to eat after purchase? Answer Fresh shell eggs can be stored in their cartons in the refrigerator for 4-5 weeks beyond the carton’s date as long as they are continuously refrigerated. Once eggs go past the "Julian" date on the carton, they will experience a progressive loss of quality. Dispose of refrigerated hard boiled eggs, including colored Easter eggs, after one week. If you buy eggs at the grocery store and accidentally leave them out overnight, it is best to discard them. The rule of thumb is that eggs left at room temperature over 2 hours should not be returned to the refrigerator to be used. Remember - inadequate refrigeration, improper handling and insufficient cooking are all factors that have contributed to Salmonella outbreaks. Salmonella is destroyed by heat, so eggs that have been handled and cooked properly should not cause human illness. For more information on egg safety and Salmonella Click Here
Riding a motorcycle for 2 hours at 65 mph has what possible negative affect on your health? Answer For motorcycle riders, wind noise is a greater factor in hearing loss than engine noise. The risk of hearing damage raises as wind speed and/or riding time increase. At 65 mph wind noise will exceed 100 dB, and after 2 hours may cause permanent hearing loss. This critical time decreases to one hour at 80 mph and 30 minutes at 100 mph. It is important to wear a helmet or ear plugs to reduce the chances for permanent hearing loss.
